In, Out and Around Comfort Zones

Current temperature outside: 13 F, Real feel: -4 !
Here I sit on my comfy couch, fuzzy socks with fuzzy lined slippers keeping my toes toasty, blanket on my lap, wearing a sweater, and my coffee nearby.
Not much is going to motivate me away from this comfort zone!
And yet… my dog will need to be taken outside so as to not leave what she can’t contain all day on a rug somewhere.
My daughter has an orthodontist appointment (from which she is hoping to hear when she may be rid of the oral hardware).
Duty calls.
And it’s not begrudging.
I love my daughter.
Our black pug brings joy and requires care to continue to do so.
Love, joy, care – outside myself.
Yet bringing peace to my heart.
These motivate me to venture out into the bitter chill.
Today.
On a daily basis, my comfort zones are:
pockets of introverted quiet; my enneagram 6 tendency to prevent projected worst-case scenarios; 7.5 hours uninterrupted nightly sleep; one-to-one coffee talks with friends, and other habits by which I attempt to control my personal comfort, while rationalizing that this is how I function best.
There is SOME validity to that.
SOMETIMES.
But not all the time.
As tempting as it is to try to create an 80-degree, sunny and calm zen bliss, minimizing the conflict and clattering noise,  uh…this is NOT how life on earth functions.
Heaven may be like that.
But not here and now.
As I note in in “Heaven’s Not Here” in my book (p. 130),
“We will miss heaven if we set our hearts on those things.”
Controlling our environment and relationships to suit our flawed sense of comfort will leave us A.L.O.N.E.
And God did not create us for that.
Heaven is the opposite of alone.
This world is not heaven, but God’s grace allows us movie-trailer previews through the lens of what the world sees when we sacrifice our comfort to care for others.
TODAY – have the courage to articulate the comfort zones you’re tempted to selfishly protect.
Then, consider God’s heart-words below, breathed out to us by His Spirit, and trust HIM to preserve your soul’s peace better than your comfort zones can.
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us… ~ John 1:14a
Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “Anyone who wants to be the first must be the very last, and the servant of all. ~ Mark 9:35
Therefore, I urge you brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice – this is your true and proper worship. ~ Romans 12:1
